    Day 13: Tingly feelings

One of the big conversations I have enjoyed as I have unpacked LAMPE‘s Meaningful PE and the pillars they have shared is to try and explain what is meant by Delight. Delight is not the same as joy or fun and it is important to try and distinguish between the difference. Kretchmar’s writings mention fun regularly, this is how he has explained fun: “Things that are fun are often temporary, and they are usually not meaningful.  Fun can be used like a band-aid, something that covers over a sore but doesn’t affect a lasting cure. Fun is used by physical educators to mask what could be a distasteful experience. One involving effort,…

    Day 11: Life Priorities

Today, Mr Andy Milne shared this blog post through twitter. The author, Mr Ryan Stetler has written a beautiful post about Life Priorities and a Health lesson that he shares with his HS students about their life priorities and how they rank them and then asks reflective questions to enable them to really reflect on what they believe in and why; and whether their actions and choices are in alignment with the decisions that they make. Stetler then goes on to explain that his own health has been poor recently and that this has truly given him a moment to reflect on his life priorities and decisions. I thought that…

Day 10: Comic relief or spot-on?

This video was shared on Facebook inside of a PE and Health group that I frequent. I wasn’t sure what I would get when I hit ‘play’ as PE is often portrayed so negatively in a Video or TV medium and so I was pleasantly surprised to watch and laugh along with this frustrated and articulate father. Two pieces of string learning German, I will be chortling for some time. How do PE teachers keep the ‘E’ part real during eLearning, and then translate that back afterwards? I am hoping that with time for discussion about what we want to ‘keep’ and what could be ‘removed’ or how we could…

    Day 9: Self Care

The last few days, and possibly the last few weeks, I have been working really hard to produce high-quality lessons for my students; to give feedback to every single FlipGrid post, online forum comment, to send emails reminding students that I am here and want to work with them; creating assessments that are open-ended and allows students to share their thinking about the topics we’ve been covering. I am finding that it is challenging to do this and not to have the person-to-person time to reflect, share and engage in whether what I am doing is the right thing for this current climate. I have been prioritizing exercise in our…

    Day 8: Finding your tribe

I don’t really watch sport on TV. I’m not sure why this is, I will watch it with a fleeting interest but I am not aware of key players or significance of matches. This revelation can come as a shock for other PE people or coaches I work with or new acquaintances who make assumptions about my sports-watching habits. When I go to PE conferences, I can find it challenging to find my tribe. As an introvert who has a hardness of hearing; a lack of team sport skills (compared to some of the amazing athletes/colleagues/friends); a passion about pedagogy over sports units and someone who doesn’t drink but would…

    Day 7: Identities

I am a Runner. I say this with confidence. There are many people who know a lot more about running and have done more running. But I would label myself as a ‘runner’. If you took a photo of me and asked me to caption it, I would probably say ‘Mel, runner’ as the title. This is what I see when I look in the mirror. This is the identity that I have given myself. I often wonder what identity my students give themselves and where they get that from – if I took a photo of them and then asked them to identify and label it, what would the…

    Day 6: Gratefulness

Dale Sidebottom is an infectiously energetic man. He radiates happiness and joy and his want to be kind, well but also moving is clear in all of his intentions. I have very much enjoyed communicating with him on a number of things since eLearning began, and have really felt that he is working to empower PE and Health educators to be more in control during our current climate. He has been putting out little videos and daily suggestions on Twitter and I wanted to write one of them out today. Write out Three things that I am Grateful for and share them. Grateful #1: to my husband Clint. Thank you…

    Day 5: Added Value

What adds Value to your life? This remarkably simple question to write, has been rolling around in my head for a week now. As I do things, I come back to this question – it is almost my “What would _____ do?” and a devil on my shoulder as well – consider the devil or angelic tone you can apply as you read those words aloud (and the ones that silently follow) – What adds Value to your life? (why are you playing that Game right now when others are out saving the planet?) Recently I re-read a Physedagogy blog post written by Adam Howell from April 2019. In it,…
