Preparing for a new year
Baby Red Mangrove by Bob Peterson CC BY SA As I sit and reflect on the joys and windfalls and the areas on which I would like to see improvement from last school year, it is often overwhelming to try and decide where to place focus for the new year at hand. I would like to share some of the long wish list that I am pondering about and to see where this shapes and takes me for the coming 12 months. I have enjoyed reading and listening to various sources this summer, a few of these include Andy Vasily’s blog, Vicky Davis and Joey Feith’s blog as well as…

Emails taking over all of your time….?
Emails can take over my life. I find that when I get back from teaching in the Gym, pool or out on the Field that suddenly my Inbox is very full and it really exhibits a physical response from me (blah!) I hate sitting at my desk. I really dislike filtering my emails, this is especially the case when I receive emails that I shouldn’t have had in the first place. You know what I mean, notifications to something or a CC or BCC on something that isn’t anything to do with you. An ‘all staff’ email that didn’t need to include you or a ‘I am selling’ this email…

Managing the More Mobile Workplace
071of365[NTR23] by licensed by ntr23 CC BY SA NC As I have been working on my PE iPod trial I have had to do some research on different issues that I hadn’t really thought about when I began working with mobile technology. I knew that there would be issues, we are in Vietnam and running a server and network that is limited for many reasons, but I hadn’t really thought deeply about how this would impact us as a school and what might need to be used/built/employed for greater functionality. I am going to share some of my research over a number of blog posts, but what I really…

iPod Trial – Picking up PE01
iPod #1 (PE01) was bought before winter break in a move to have the Tech department try it out and check that it could run on our school network. I went into the office today excited to see the new model (pink for visibility) and talk to them about what they trialed. I have decided that I will be upbeat and positive here, and that any issue is actually with me not sharing my master plan, not with anybody else who may have misinterpreted or not fully got with what is happening with the trial… So, summary from today’s meeting: iPods that belong to the school/department need to be labelled…

iPod trial – Background
Technology is the way forward for practical subjects like PE, and for students who are becoming more familiar with using cameras and video and blogging as well as having easy access to mobile devices, it is only fitting that we use these forms of technology to enhance lessons and provide easy ways to let students actually ‘see’ and learn from their technique as the professionals in sport get to do. The flood of devices onto the market has certainly allowed the prices to start to come down into a PE budget reach and with this in mind I approached my school to see if I could trial using some mobile…

Innovative Grant
iPad unpacking by ntr23 licensed by CC NC SA For the last year or so, I have been working with some colleagues to try and get our school and PE department more mobile. I have bought my own iPad3 and have been trialing it in different ways and have loved what it brings to my lessons and my students. I am encouraging my Technology director to come and see this in the field so that he can see first hand what can happen with just one iPad and a PE lesson that is ready for it. This year our school has decided to offer some Innovative Technology Grants – some…

How much is too much?
One Click or two by Kaptain Kobold licensed by CC BY NC SA How much work in a unit is too much? I would be the first to say it is likely that I am guilty of trying to do too much in a PE unit, but is it too much? How do you gauge what is acceptable and what is too much work for you as the teacher (or teachers if you teach across the grade level) and the students? I would like to try and quantify this if possible. Here are my ideas so far: It is too much work when – you can’t easily get the…
