Legacy
” I’m Just a PE Teacher” How many of you have been in a situation where you have defended yourself with this statement. At PHASE-AP recently, Carlos Galvez and I hosted a conversation with a room full of people talking about how we can add-on to what we do to advocate for PE at various levels. We shared the common feelings that PE teachers have – feeling marginalised, left out of ‘core’ teacher conversations, left in the Gym, far away from the epi-centre of the school and staffrooms, not valued or understood by parents, administrators and other teachers. Pushed into coaching roles and not given the time to teach. Left…

Clarify & Consolidate
Data can only take us so far. At the recent Hong Kong PHASE-AP conference this weekend, we were reminded that there is so much data being collected in a range of ways on so much of what we do (fitness trackers, phone apps telling us about time on devices, cameras tracking, heart rate for zones, power meters, surveys, feedback conversations, testing etc) that we also need to consider how to put this data into perspective with a view to improving our practice as teachers but to not lose sight of the goal of offering a range of experiences to grow our young people into better versions of themselves. So with…

PHASE-AP 2019
This year I have been very excited to return to Hong Kong and to HKIS to present at the PHASE-Asia Pacific Conference. I want to thank all those who came along to my sessions for their energy and willingness to engage in a learning conversation with others for the great questions and dialogue that we have shared as a group. I am always interested in how these sessions can be more relevant and meaningful to those who come along – please do feel free to share with me here or by email or on twitter (or in-person). These are the links to the resources that I shared either in my…

Core Values, Advocation, Professional Growth, Networks and Literacy. A call to action.
Sunset at Yaquina Head by Bureau of Land Management Oregon and Washington CC BY What do you stand for? How are you core values visible to your student/ department/ community? Are you delivering on the mandate of QPE? What makes you say that? This past weekend I was humbled to give one of the Keynotes at the Asia-Pacific PE conference in Hong Kong. This is the third annual conference hosted at HK International School and saw a lot of Educator’s from Asia, Australia and also now from the USA and UK in attendance. The last few months I have really been delving into who I am and what I stand…

Mind the Gap – an analysis of where some things stand
Mind the Gap by Pablofalv CC BY NC SA “Mind the Gap please.” When I lived in England and travelled on the underground train system, this recorded message came at each station – a warning that the train didn’t always meet the platform and to Mind the Gap as you stepped off the train or on to the train and to not fall or drop your bag through the gap created between the train and platform. This ‘Gap’ is a reoccurring theme of the last few months as I am trying to work out how best to analyse What is causing the student learning gaps and to determine How best to deal…

APPEC16 – links and resources
This weekend I am grateful to APPEC for allowing me to come and present at their annual conference hosted by Hong Kong International School (HKIS). There are hundreds of PE teachers, Outdoor Educationalists, some researchers, students and vendors – all here to unite about growing our professional practice around Student learning. You can get on social media and look for #APPEC16 to join in the fun. When I present, I am conscious that I want to engage people in the thinking and the physical experiences as well as have time to ask questions and clarify ideas and to take things away for discussion or implementation when they get back to…

APPEC – Why did the chicken cross the road?
Six Days Old by normanack CC BY Why did the chicken cross the road? This old riddle was the opening question posed to us by Dr Graham Dodd of ACHPER at the APPEC conference in Hong Kong in November. It through me a little, here is this incredibly knowledgeable man who has dedicated his life’s work to understanding the importance of Motion in Human Development and he begins by asking about chickens… what is going on here? What answer crosses your mind? Do you go for the same ‘to get to the other side?’ or do you have a different answer based on experience as a Chicken farmer? as a…
