    PHASE-AP 2019

This year I have been very excited to return to Hong Kong and to HKIS to present at the PHASE-Asia Pacific Conference. I want to thank all those who came along to my sessions for their energy and willingness to engage in a learning conversation with others for the great questions and dialogue that we have shared as a group. I am always interested in how these sessions can be more relevant and meaningful to those who come along – please do feel free to share with me here or by email or on twitter (or in-person). These are the links to the resources that I shared either in my…

Professional Growth 2018-19 Part 1 – The Pilot and Standards

The Three Rocks by alfonso maseda varela CC BY NC SA  A new year and new ideas.  Daniel Pink in his book When, writes about the power of beginnings and endings – and a new school year brings about a whole assortment of possibilities wiped clean from the end of the previous academic year.    Last year I was involved in discussing a new way to grow Professionally at ISB and this year am part of the pilot group that will try out our recommended approach and give feedback about the process, but also (hopefully) grow as a professional in my own learning in a more authentic way. “Effective professional development…

What core underlying standards are you teaching?

What? This week, Aaron Beighle vlogged out over twitter to ask about standards based grading but focused specifically on asking PE people what they teach through PE.  You can see his vlog here (3m09s): So What? This has been a constant thinking for me – what is it that I believe in?  What are my core values and do they align up with what I teach?  Are these values that are worth investing in for my students (so they align with the school values and core expectations and life goals) and are they culturally sensitive to the needs of our students in Beijing China? I have been working to try…

Professional Development – Part 8 – Feedback and Reflection

Miyajima Torii by Pablo Fernandez CC BY NC SA I have been blogging this past year in stages about some Professional Development I have personally undertaken.  This blog post explores the sharing from others in my PLN based on a series of videos taken of one of my classes and me asking for some feedback from others in the community.  If you are just joining in, welcome, but you might like to go back to Part 7 here to find out some of the back story.  This post is about the feedback from others and reflective growth moving forward from here. I was initially really excited for some conversation amongst…

    Professional Development – Part 7 – Notices /Wonderings

Mel Hamada in G8 Badminton Class at ISB This week I have been watching and thinking about my teaching practice.  I have blogged about this a lot already but you can read the last blog post here that explains what I am currently doing. I will say that I was very nervous about what I would see watching these videos.  I always find my voice the most interesting – do I really sound like that?  But once my nervousness and feeling of worry were over, it was interesting to watch the lesson from the camera lens perspective, rather than from what I see while teaching.  It was so powerful to…

    Shape Boston – A Close Encounter…

The Beautiful Eclipse by Stefans02 CC BY The World is enormous.  Every-time I look longingly for the next holiday period and start thinking about possibly destinations, I am reminded of how big our amazing world is and that I will not have the time or money to see most of it.  But with technology, I can still keep up with friends and family from all over our glorious globe and that is something I am truly thankful for. Last week I was fortunate enough to attend the Shape America National conference in Boston, and I have blogged about some of my theme takeaways here.  However, my biggest take away has…

APPEC – TGfU and Visible Thinking Routines

November 15-16th the first Asia Pacific Physical Education Conference will take place in Hong Kong at the HKIS campus.  There is a lot of buzz around this conference and I am looking forward to going and meeting up with a lot of #Physed people that I have been working alongside online (through Twitter) but now get the chance to meet in person and learn with and from. I am presenting on two different workshops – the first is on Teaching Games for Understanding and the use of Visible Thinking Routines as a part of determining what students think as they go through our work as teachers.  I have been…

Invasion Games – Designing a Game

Koi by David CC BY NC Simplicity really is key to a unit that runs smoothly and I continue to aspire to be able to keep things simple to eliminate the stress that I feel when I can see the end of a unit coming towards us (date is fixed) and I haven’t finished yet.  I haven’t yet found all of the right pieces but I do feel that with this unit I have got close to the desired goals that I set myself in delivering the unit: to keep things simple – reduce written tasks, reduce homework for the students and for myself connection – to connect learning to real…
