PhysEdsummit 3.0 – A wrap!
Title Slide from our Presentation (CC BY NC SA Mel Hamada) The PhysEdsummit 3.0 has been running for 12 hours and this morning (10am Japan time) Mark Williams and I were very fortunate to share our session on Inquiry, Teaching Games for Understanding and Physed. If you didn’t get the chance to see it, you can find all in the information linked here. I want to share that I do not believe that I am an expert in this area. The ideas here are not ones that Mark and I have created, we are advocates of this model of teaching and we have taken the time to research, read…

Communication – new idea to try
This past year Osama Abujafar has been kindly asking me to join a Voxer group that involves a number of PE teachers. I have been putting this off as I had limited time to investigate a new app or tech gizmo and felt that I had enough going on – but thanks for asking Osama! However, the PhysedSummit team asked that all presenters be involved in Voxer for important communication sharing. And now I have been involved in Voxer, I would like to advocate for how it is changing my work space. I am not a fan of App sharing just to get good at an app so I want to…

MYP Next Chapter for PHE – initial thoughts jumping in…
Cliff Jumping by Barney Moss CC BY Last August, Yokohama Int’l School (YIS) transitioned into the MYP‘s Next Chapter. Our PhysEd department has set itself the task of taking 12 months to digest the four new criterion. We are finding this is not an easy task, as the new criterion at first look appear straightforward but half way through the year we are finding this task rather daunting. I would like to share some of the work that we have been doing and ask others to comment on the way in which they are using the four criterions in their schools. Below are the four PHE Criterion. I have listed…

TeachTechPlay Episode 4.5
Who are your mentors? heroes? who inspires you in your field? I have about 10 #physed people who are on my go-to list and whom I follow avidly on Twitter and regularly email or text with in many different forums. I was delighted to be invited to take part on a special PE episode of Teach Tech Play hosted by Michael Ha and Eleni Kyritsis. The premise of this Google Hangout is to share a tool you use in your classes in 4 minutes. Each presenter shares their tech go-to tool and then there are a few questions to clarify or extend your knowledge and then after each presenter has…

PE Minutes – Survey Results
PE Minutes are precious and I haven’t met a Physed Teacher who wouldn’t like to have more of them each day or week or month with their students. A few weeks ago I asked the PE community online to share the number of classes and the minutes/week they had in their PE classes from Early Learning to Grade 12. In the Gallery above, you can see the results of the survey. Now, the sample size isn’t huge, with some emails and Twitter sharing I had about 30 people respond for themselves or their departments. I would like to share these results to let others think about what their PE…

Track and Field Ramblings – New Age of PE and T&F days!
InfraRed Running Sculpture by Vincent_AF CC BY NC My friend @doug_gleddie and I recently had a wee Twitter flurry focused on alternate track and field events/days. After our short exchange of ideas, we decided to collaborate on this blog post to highlight our perspectives and thoughts. Take a read, tell us what you think and, most importantly, please contribute to the google doc we have started to share your ideas as well (link at the end of the article)! Doug’s Ramblings! I started teaching PE at a school that followed a very traditional program and T&F was run as a school wide meet. When I took over as the male…

PE Specialist Teachers, PE minutes and more
One on One – 02 by Brian Carson CC BY NC SA “Sports teachers have a previously unsung role in the academic development of children.” In the July break I came across a number of articles surrounding the published findings of Dick Telford’s research into the effect of having a specialist PE teacher in ES classes. He and his research team “looked at two things: the effect of physical activity and the value of having specialist physical in primary school.” Now, before I tell you the results, let me also tell you that not many schools in our World have the ability to employ a full-time ES PE teacher. Some…
