What core underlying standards are you teaching?
What? This week, Aaron Beighle vlogged out over twitter to ask about standards based grading but focused specifically on asking PE people what they teach through PE. You can see his vlog here (3m09s): So What? This has been a constant thinking for me – what is it that I believe in? What are my core values and do they align up with what I teach? Are these values that are worth investing in for my students (so they align with the school values and core expectations and life goals) and are they culturally sensitive to the needs of our students in Beijing China? I have been working to try…

Professional Learning Part 4 – Collecting Evidence – Lesson 1 + 2
untitled by Mark Barry CC BY NC SA This year I have been working around two professional development goals – one is data driven and the other is to video myself teaching and work to see areas of strength and areas for growth. I am on a quest to use data more effectively in my PE classes to really see if what I am doing has the desired affect on student learning. I have been sharing a lot of my thoughts, concerns and questions on Voxer and have been soaking up the commentary of others – one in particular, Dr. Stephen Harvey, a lecturer and writer working in the USA…

Professional Learning + Data = analysis student learning – Part 1
Algorithms by Kevin Dooley CC BY I am grappling with the direction of my professional growth and defining a SMART goal for the next academic year. The focus of course is Student Learning in Physed (and Wellness/Health). I have moved to the International School of Beijing (ISB) and as with any school, there are expectations of professional growth and the Middle School at ISB have decided to do this in two different ways. Firstly we are being asked to “develop a goal that shows growth in your ability to use data to provide a more personalized learning experience for your students” and secondly we are being asked to set a guiding…

Spontaneous Dance Mob
Our Grade 9 students all take PE at the same time, so we have 65 students and three little spaces to play. Our PE department made the decision a few years ago to do Dance at the same time as to share the Gym and our Dance room and avoid the Turf during the winter cold and usual rainy seasons. This has been a good decision as it allows our students to mingle out of class groups and for us to really share the work that is happening in our unit. This unit focused on What makes a Great performance? and we look at a whole host of important features…

APPEC – TGfU and Visible Thinking Routines
November 15-16th the first Asia Pacific Physical Education Conference will take place in Hong Kong at the HKIS campus. There is a lot of buzz around this conference and I am looking forward to going and meeting up with a lot of #Physed people that I have been working alongside online (through Twitter) but now get the chance to meet in person and learn with and from. I am presenting on two different workshops – the first is on Teaching Games for Understanding and the use of Visible Thinking Routines as a part of determining what students think as they go through our work as teachers. I have been…

Teaching Games for Understanding & Visible Thinking Routines for #ACHPER15
Sports by David Pickett CC BY NC SA This post shares the notes and links to resources from my ACHPER Teaching Games for Understanding and Visible Thinking Routines Workshop. I presented this in Adelaide on Tuesday 14th April, 2015. I created this Google Presentation but didn’t present it, but rather went through all of the notes listed here, but it is intended as my workshop plan and to give others a chance to consolidate the activities that we completed. Other resources can be found here: TGfU – Invasion Games Progression Questions Coaching Question Starters Routine Learning Questions – resources from Mark Church and Pam Harper Invasion Claim/Support/Question Routine example #1…

Screencasting – state your purpose, find your app!
231 by Jaypeg CC BY NC Screencasting is the ability to narrate an audio (and sometimes a video of yourself too) over your computer or iDevice screen so you can talk and share your screen at the same time. This can be a very valuable tool for sharing feedback or instructions/tutorials with your students. There are many different apps out there that will allow you to screencast. The challenge is choosing the right one that you like and then learning how to use it. I have found that the most important question to answer is: what is the purpose of your screencasts? If the purpose is achieved in under 5 minutes and you don’t need…

#newYISgym – renovation and suggestions
School Gym 3 by Tim Suess CC BY SA This summer I will vacation away from Yokohama, with my family, and when I get back in August a brand new refitted YIS School Gymnasium, Dance Studio and PE office will await me. I am bubbling with excitement but it is also with some reserve as I did this at my last school (well, a new gym not a refurbishment) and we learned pretty quickly about hindsight and how wonderful she is. I asked my #physed community this week if they were about to be as lucky as my school is, what would they wish for in their gym? Now, our…
