Designing a new Striking and Fielding Game!
86-T9231 by Stanley Yeo CC BY NC SA #physed teachers all over the World – if you have space to work with – rejoice! Sadly for us at YIS, space is a commodity that we just don’t have. We are lucky as we do have three spaces – a Basketball sized Gymnasium, a Fitness/Dance studio space (that does not really fit us all in, but we make it work) and a smallish synthetic turf space. Our curriculum is limited to the following strands as we don’t have the luxury of space: Invasion Games (inside/outside); Net Games; Fitness; Movement Composition and Striking and Fielding games. Now as we work…

Planning for Performance – what are we up to?
User Centred Design presentation process design on a whiteboard by Wonderland CC BY NC A few weeks ago I wrote about the new IBO MYP PHE Criterion and my initial thoughts on the first year using them. I want to try and blog about these criterion by unwrapping one criteria at a time over a few blog posts in a concentrated way to get my head around each one. I will aim to put together a blend of my Professional circle’s viewpoints; my own experiences with this Criterion and then put out some research and collected ideas with my friend and wise PHE guru, Ken Forde. I am hoping that by…

MYP Next Chapter for PHE – initial thoughts jumping in…
Cliff Jumping by Barney Moss CC BY Last August, Yokohama Int’l School (YIS) transitioned into the MYP‘s Next Chapter. Our PhysEd department has set itself the task of taking 12 months to digest the four new criterion. We are finding this is not an easy task, as the new criterion at first look appear straightforward but half way through the year we are finding this task rather daunting. I would like to share some of the work that we have been doing and ask others to comment on the way in which they are using the four criterions in their schools. Below are the four PHE Criterion. I have listed…

SEPEP – reflection on G10 unit – Part 1
Leader Lock by Sarah Joy CC BY SA A few weeks ago I began a SEPEP journey with my HS classes. If you aren’t familiar with this concept, please check out my original blog post where I explain the premise and share resources. We are four weeks (two to go) into our first Grade 10 SEPEP unit at Yokohama Intl School and so far things are really looking good. Students are arriving with a sense of belonging and are engaging in peer coaching conversation that is meaningful and relevant. Let me tell you how we set this up, with about 54 students and two playing areas, we needed to…

Dance – Concepts, Visual Learning and Formative Assessment
A few months ago I posted about our Just Dance unit for Grade 7 students. This was a big change for us as Dance educators and has really been a valuable learning tool for our students. As this was so successful for our G7 students, we decided to run a more advanced form of it for our G9 and G10 students. We wanted them to experience a Dance unit that allowed for success for everyone and that ensured we have a chance to formatively assess along the way rather than leaving the final summative assessment as the be-all-end-all of the unit. We also decided to use a Visual Learning approach…

Just Dance!
I am not a trained Dance teacher. I like dancing, but I am hardly a professional. I can teach dance but I really wish I was better. I discovered Just Dance on our Wii and after listening to Jarrod Robinson discuss how he uses Just Dance in his classes and talking to Alex Thomas, I am jumping on the bandwagon. I have always gone for traditional Dance methods – teach moving to the beat, offer some dances such as folk or line or paired dances and then look at different styles and study videos on Youtube and try some more basic moves and then ask students to create a dance.…

What is physical literacy and how is this affecting my curriculum thinking?
Surfing Jedi by Pedro Vezini CC BY NC SA As I enjoy doing, a fabulous conversation emerged on twitter the other day between a group of us in the South East Asia/Australian region. The start of the conversation was an ongoing chat we’ve been having about looking closely at what we do with our ELC or ECC or Early Childhood aged PE students and what colleagues are doing in their classrooms. The focus has been looking at a Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) and I was learning a little from others in this field who are implementing programs to support students and working with professionals outside of teaching to help set up…

PE Minutes – Survey Results
PE Minutes are precious and I haven’t met a Physed Teacher who wouldn’t like to have more of them each day or week or month with their students. A few weeks ago I asked the PE community online to share the number of classes and the minutes/week they had in their PE classes from Early Learning to Grade 12. In the Gallery above, you can see the results of the survey. Now, the sample size isn’t huge, with some emails and Twitter sharing I had about 30 people respond for themselves or their departments. I would like to share these results to let others think about what their PE…
