PhysEdsummit 3.0 – A wrap!
Title Slide from our Presentation (CC BY NC SA Mel Hamada) The PhysEdsummit 3.0 has been running for 12 hours and this morning (10am Japan time) Mark Williams and I were very fortunate to share our session on Inquiry, Teaching Games for Understanding and Physed. If you didn’t get the chance to see it, you can find all in the information linked here. I want to share that I do not believe that I am an expert in this area. The ideas here are not ones that Mark and I have created, we are advocates of this model of teaching and we have taken the time to research, read…

#PhysEdSummit – Saturday 25th October
The PhysEdSummit is an online Google Hangout type conference designed to allow PE teachers to share with each other online over a specific set of topics. There are a number of different 1 hour sessions you can sign up to attend, and these are led by a specific person and mediated or facilitated by another to allow time for discussion but also to keep things moving along. The first time this is going to happen is this weekend! The schedule can be found here. I have been talking with Naomi Hartl (@misshartl) and Matt Pomeroy (@PhysEd_Pomeroy), two of the most generous and amazing PE teachers I have got to know,…

TeachTechPlay Episode 4.5
Who are your mentors? heroes? who inspires you in your field? I have about 10 #physed people who are on my go-to list and whom I follow avidly on Twitter and regularly email or text with in many different forums. I was delighted to be invited to take part on a special PE episode of Teach Tech Play hosted by Michael Ha and Eleni Kyritsis. The premise of this Google Hangout is to share a tool you use in your classes in 4 minutes. Each presenter shares their tech go-to tool and then there are a few questions to clarify or extend your knowledge and then after each presenter has…

Concept based learning – Invasion Games
Lego Spellen by Dirk Houbrechts CC BY NC For those who know me, you will know that I have recently moved from UNIS Hanoi to Yokohama Int’l School. This has been a big change for myself (and my family) and I am working in a new PE department and have taken on the Head of Department role. I am relishing the opportunity to put many of our good practice down in writing so that it is clear to others that our PE dept sees some fundamental truths as important and that this manifests itself in our classes, everyday. Now I am also part of the #PEPLC community, organising a…

#PEHangout 2 – Concepts
I am very excited to share our second PEHangout via Google Hangouts. If you missed the first one you can check it out here. We are all now getting the hang of this technology (almost) and it was really great to start talking about Concepts with the panel. Alex Thomas, Jarrod Robinson and I (with support from an internet-down Ken Forde) chatted a bit about what we get up to in our PE lessons and started circling the really big topic of Concepts and how we see this within the contexts of our classes. It was clear by the end that we felt there are three areas that we focus…

PE Hangouts begin!
So, PE doesn’t always get a good rap – are we all just “jocks” who run around and get amazing sun tans? or are we mis-understood because we wear shorts and sometimes flip flops to school each day? Possibly… However there are a number of PE teachers in the region who are keen to discuss issues that come up in our line of work – I wanted to create a PD network for me with other teachers in simliar schools or trying to work on similar issues within PE and Health and so we have decided to share our conversations with others in the hope that we can connect…
