Professional Growth 2018-19 Part 1 – The Pilot and Standards
The Three Rocks by alfonso maseda varela CC BY NC SA A new year and new ideas. Daniel Pink in his book When, writes about the power of beginnings and endings – and a new school year brings about a whole assortment of possibilities wiped clean from the end of the previous academic year. Last year I was involved in discussing a new way to grow Professionally at ISB and this year am part of the pilot group that will try out our recommended approach and give feedback about the process, but also (hopefully) grow as a professional in my own learning in a more authentic way. “Effective professional development…

Discovering Meaning in PE
This post is long overdue. I have taken a hiatus from writing and this has been both good (giving me time for other focus) and bad ( I have genuinely missed writing about my thinking about and recording my work in PE). This week I have been enjoying listening, reading and dialoguing about the Purpose of PE for me as a teacher but also in connection with student learning and the ultimate goal of every PE teacher – How do we make PE meaningful so that every student in our care wants to come back to our spaces and then in time wants to create their own meaningful movement journeys…

Interconnectedness. Meaningful lives. Using the Force to change the World.
Any superhero story is sure to leave the audience uplifted and inspired to go on and do great things. You are left with a feeling of shoulder back, standing tall, and hands on the hips ready to face every challenge ahead. This week, ISB invited Peter Dalglish to come and share his upstanding message. With no powerpoint or slide deck, music or gimmicks, Peter shared his message with our staff for an hour and received a standing ovation at the end. Motivational with truth, wisdom and collective World experiences that have changed his landscape have molded him now into an activist in the International Schools community. Peter’s talk started…

Google Innovator – Catalysts for communities
Catalysts for Communities was born from conversations about the Mentoring program at ISB. Our Mentoring or Life Skills or Homeroom or Tutor program that is run across our Middle School is in the process of a re-write as we pull different standards from subject areas and consider What do we need to include in the program? and What is the purpose of the program? Perhaps the purpose, vision , nd mission is aligned more to our school ISB vision and mission but as we do not follow one set of standards (each department went on a focused journey to find the standards that are the best fit for us…

Professional Development – Part 8 – Feedback and Reflection
Miyajima Torii by Pablo Fernandez CC BY NC SA I have been blogging this past year in stages about some Professional Development I have personally undertaken. This blog post explores the sharing from others in my PLN based on a series of videos taken of one of my classes and me asking for some feedback from others in the community. If you are just joining in, welcome, but you might like to go back to Part 7 here to find out some of the back story. This post is about the feedback from others and reflective growth moving forward from here. I was initially really excited for some conversation amongst…

Professional Learning – Part 6 – Putting myself on the line
ISB MS Professional Development – Peer Observation Task 2016-17 This year our MS Admin challenged us to invite a colleague to observe a lesson via video of our lesson and sharing. You can read the overview of this process above. As a new teacher in this school, this is a bit of a big ask. I have blogged a lot about my Professional Development work this year and you can go back and read up about Data and how I am trying to use this in my student learning. If you team teach then the opportunity to challenge each other and push and to share your observations is very powerful…
