Aquatics – applying training principles and SMART goals

Blue Diver by Pablo Fernandez CC BY SA NC Our Grade 8 students have choice over which unit they would like to complete in a 12-lesson block.  We offer this as a way to delve more deeply into something that interests students.  Teachers have used student polls to gather evidence about what we should offer, and we notice interest shifts but we have constraints on facilities and the need to assess students using the same Strand/Standards over the course of the year. The most recent unit offered included these four options: Dance, Gymnastics, Fitness and Aquatics with our assessment around Locomotor movements which each teacher interpreted slightly differently based on…

    Shape Boston – A Close Encounter…

The Beautiful Eclipse by Stefans02 CC BY The World is enormous.  Every-time I look longingly for the next holiday period and start thinking about possibly destinations, I am reminded of how big our amazing world is and that I will not have the time or money to see most of it.  But with technology, I can still keep up with friends and family from all over our glorious globe and that is something I am truly thankful for. Last week I was fortunate enough to attend the Shape America National conference in Boston, and I have blogged about some of my theme takeaways here.  However, my biggest take away has…

    Training – Running and Fitness

This week I have caught up on Jarrod Robinson’s (aka The PE Geek) podcasts and it has been a little while so I had many episodes to choose from as I have picked up my training this last 10 days so more time to listen to ideas and see what appeals in my current thinking and planning of units.  If you don’t listen to the podcasts, think about adding them as a resource of about 20mins/ fortnight to your calendar. I am in the midst of cramming my brain full of Training Principles and ideas for my Grade 10 unit.  I want to have them leaving the unit considering How…

Movement Composition – Kung Fu fighting….

Kung Fu Fighting from Just Dance on YouTube – an awesome warm up for your kids! Where did this year go?  It is already time to begin the final units in PHE and I am excited to get into this Movement Comp unit with my Grade 8’s.  The focus for me is on doing less and having time for more content and I am going to do my best to stick to this plan. The Key Concept for me here is Creativity – I read Dominique Dalais’s most recent blog post on his Martial Arts unit and I spoke with my colleague, Asako Clark about how she set up a…

When things don’t go to plan…

The Penguins of Madagascar YouTube clip by Dreamworks TV Spring Break and I have had the chance to catch up on many things including movies that my children enjoy.  It is challenging to find movies that the whole family will get something out of and keep parents from crying of boredom or just being totally over the hypes of the moment. The scene that I have above is from the Penguins movie where the villain of the movie calls the hero headquarters over Skype, and of course the call doesn’t go to plan.  Technology fails a few times based on octopus error.  It is funny because of how close to…

    PhysEdSummit #1 – It’s a Wrap

Last weekend ago I was so excited to be a part of the PhysEdSummit which was hosted as a series of Google Hangouts late into my Japanese night (breakfast time for USA #Physed folk) by the very amazing Physedagogy team.  If you didn’t tune in, don’t panic!  You can catch up on the program here and if you want to see my Google Presentation without the Google Hangout session narration, you can see them here.   I am planning to do some more PD and watching over the next month. I wanted to share that the progress being made in PE is a great step for those in the profession…

    TeachTechPlay Episode 4.5

Who are your mentors? heroes? who inspires you in your field?  I have about 10 #physed people who are on my go-to list and whom I follow avidly on Twitter and regularly email or text with in many different forums.  I was delighted to be invited to take part on a special PE episode of Teach Tech Play hosted by Michael Ha and Eleni Kyritsis.  The premise of this Google Hangout is to share a tool you use in your classes in 4 minutes.  Each presenter shares their tech go-to tool and then there are a few questions to clarify or extend your knowledge and then after each presenter has…
