    G7 iPad trial – #physed contributions

G7 students have been trialling the use of iPad mini’s for the last few weeks of school.  This has enabled them (and the PE teachers) to use 1:1 mobile technology as a class in our PE classes – a big step forward! We have started off with Coach’s Eye. Coach’s Eye is not just for sports use – it can be used anywhere you would like to film something and allow for feedback, analysis, comparison or screencasting to assist in learning.  We decided to use this tool in our assessment of G7 student’s throwing technique in our striking and fielding unit. We have spent considerable time looking at the important aspects…

Dance – Concepts, Visual Learning and Formative Assessment

A few months ago I posted about our Just Dance unit for Grade 7 students.  This was a big change for us as Dance educators and has really been a valuable learning tool for our students. As this was so successful for our G7 students, we decided to run a more advanced form of it for our G9 and G10 students.  We wanted them to experience a Dance unit that allowed for success for everyone and that ensured we have a chance to formatively assess along the way rather than leaving the final summative assessment as the be-all-end-all of the unit.  We also decided to use a Visual Learning approach…

Quickcast and autoCrat – two important #pegeek tools

Invasive Plant Work by Zen Sutherland CC BY NC SA This is not my first sharing on the use of Screencasts and autoCrat as part of the #Physed teacher’s toolkit.  But I thought I would share some screencasts of my latest autoCrat journey as I have been asked about it a lot recently on Twitter. I now use Quickcast as my screencast tool, it is easy to install (on my Mac) and is very quick to set up and go.  I can only cast for 3 minutes and this is perfect as I can say what I need to usually in that time frame.  The screencasts are saved online so…

    Just Dance!

I am not a trained Dance teacher.  I like dancing, but I am hardly a professional.  I can teach dance but I really wish I was better.  I discovered Just Dance on our Wii and after listening to Jarrod Robinson discuss how he uses Just Dance in his classes and talking to Alex Thomas, I am jumping on the bandwagon. I have always gone for traditional Dance methods – teach moving to the beat, offer some dances such as folk or line or paired dances and then look at different styles and study videos on Youtube  and try some more basic moves and then ask students to create a dance.…

Concept based learning – Invasion Games

Lego Spellen by Dirk Houbrechts CC BY NC For those who know me, you will know that I have recently moved from UNIS Hanoi to Yokohama Int’l School.  This has been a big change for myself (and my family) and I am working in a new PE department and have taken on the Head of Department role.  I am relishing the opportunity to put many of our good practice down in writing so that it is clear to others that our PE dept sees some fundamental truths as important and that this manifests itself in our classes, everyday.  Now I am also part of the #PEPLC community, organising a…

Sportfolios – student driven using Google Drive apps.

Sportfolios are a PE version of a student portfolio.  They enable students to take their work with them from PE which has always been somewhat tricky.  Andy Vasily shares that they are about sharing work: student, peer, teacher and after seeing some in action, I have decided to invest some research into Sportfolios to see what they are about. I have some initial reservations and also some positive ideas in ways which they could and may work with my students this year. I am concerned about how much we can load on our students.  I was in Australia for the July break and had a chance to go through my…

    New Academic year… new school!

For the last few years I have been working at UNIS Hanoi in Vietnam.  I have really learnt a lot during my time both in my Physical Education Department but also through our IT office and in the MSHS from different leadership models and beyond.  I have worked in several International schools and it is not a secret that schools are living organisms, and you need to really see how each department and individual affect the workings of a school before you pass judgement.   A wise person once told me that on the International circuit everyone is connected and so your past and your lessons stay with you as…

    #PEHangout 2 – Concepts

I am very excited to share our second PEHangout via Google Hangouts.  If you missed the first one you can check it out here. We are all now getting the hang of this technology (almost) and it was really great to start talking about Concepts with the panel.  Alex Thomas, Jarrod Robinson and I (with support from an internet-down Ken Forde) chatted a bit about what we get up to in our PE lessons and started circling the really big topic of Concepts and how we see this within the contexts of our classes.  It was clear by the end that we felt there are three areas that we focus…
