Professional Learning + Data = analysis student learning – Part 1
Algorithms by Kevin Dooley CC BY I am grappling with the direction of my professional growth and defining a SMART goal for the next academic year. The focus of course is Student Learning in Physed (and Wellness/Health). I have moved to the International School of Beijing (ISB) and as with any school, there are expectations of professional growth and the Middle School at ISB have decided to do this in two different ways. Firstly we are being asked to “develop a goal that shows growth in your ability to use data to provide a more personalized learning experience for your students” and secondly we are being asked to set a guiding…

PhysEdSummit 5.0 Student voice, participation and leadership in schools
The physedagogy team have been hard at work and last weekend the PhysEdSummit 5.0 rolled out around the World. This initiative aims to provide quality Professional Development to PhysEd teachers anywhere you can get wifi with free online sessions that allowed you to either actively be involved during a session (ask your questions, share your experiences or take polls or share resources etc) or to go back and watch the sessions and contact presenters via a variety of social media avenues. The opportunity to get involved was very impressive and as we are scattered all over the place, the timezone changes meant that at any time, there was a good…

Connecting my student’s learning
SOLO Taxonomy – Jo Bailey @LovePhyEd It has been a busy few weeks and today as I sat down to write out my new Grade 9 Community/Invasion Games Unit I found myself with some real questions about where things are heading for me as a Physed teacher. Last weekend was the PhysedSummit and I had been really excited by a few of the different presentations, but one that resonated with me was Jo Bailey’s on SOLO taxonomy – if you haven’t watched it, you can see it here. Jo (and other’s) use rubrics that are very simply written to show the hierarchical progression of learning to enable students to…

PhysEdsummit 3.0 – A wrap!
Title Slide from our Presentation (CC BY NC SA Mel Hamada) The PhysEdsummit 3.0 has been running for 12 hours and this morning (10am Japan time) Mark Williams and I were very fortunate to share our session on Inquiry, Teaching Games for Understanding and Physed. If you didn’t get the chance to see it, you can find all in the information linked here. I want to share that I do not believe that I am an expert in this area. The ideas here are not ones that Mark and I have created, we are advocates of this model of teaching and we have taken the time to research, read…

#Physedsummit 3.0 – Getting Ready!
Last year I was very excited to present at PhysedSummit 1.0 in October. It was a surreal experience to create an online presentation for others to be involved with and to chat to Matt Pomeroy as he carefully moderated my session for an hour late in the night. The PhysedSummit has grown and now in it’s third running, offers quality Physed Professional Development for free over a 24 hour period. All presenters were required to submit a proposal for their 1 hour session and the Physedagogy team have selected the presentations and have been closely working with presenters to ensure that the work offered is of the highest quality. You…
