Analysis of Parent-Teacher Conferences – making an impact

Sharing learning with Parents Last week was our school Parent-Teacher conferences.  Like every school, these happen a few times over the course of an academic year.  This past month I have been reading about Essentialism and these recent ideas and reflections have made me start to consider further the impact that we can have both on our student learners but also on our parent community when it comes to better understanding Physical Education and why it is such an essential part of our children’s education. As I do every conference day, I printed out my schedule and then took notes throughout each conference.  I wanted to collect data in a…

Professional Learning + Data = analysis student learning – Part 1

Algorithms by Kevin Dooley CC BY I am grappling with the direction of my professional growth and defining a SMART goal for the next academic year.  The focus of course is Student Learning in Physed (and Wellness/Health).  I have moved to the International School of Beijing (ISB) and as with any school, there are expectations of professional growth and the Middle School at ISB have decided to do this in two different ways. Firstly we are being asked to “develop a goal that shows growth in your ability to use data to provide a more personalized learning experience for your students” and secondly we are being asked to set a guiding…

Action Research Project – Motion – Part 2

An Evening Stroll by Doug Waldron CC BY SA In January I blogged about all of the ideas that were swimming and growing in my brain to do with an Action Research Project I would like to do.  I  have had almost two months to let these fester and take shape as well as enjoying some amazing conversations with different #Physed people who have kindly shared their ideas and more importantly their own research and findings to enable me to consider my plan. Dean Dudley (@deandudley) is a Senior Lecturer and Researcher at Macquarie University in Sydney, Aus.  He has been very generous with his time and his data and experience…

Action Research Project – Student Movement

Berlin – The Walk 017 by Daniele Civello CC BY NC Over the last year I have had the opportunity to listen to Dr Graham Dodd and his almost mantra about the importance of human motion on brain and body development.  His research and life time interest in this topic are quite motivational.  There is also more data and articles coming out about the importance of movement and the issue of ‘sitness’ as the current epidemic of sickness and I have been alarmed at the idea that me (who I consider to be somewhat athletic) could have limited health benefits from the training I do as I then tend to…

Recruiting for a new International Teaching job

059of365 by ntr23 CC BY NC SA October brings in a new season – recruitment time.  Most International Schools will begin to update the potential openings on their websites and hordes of teachers all over the World begin conversations about what they are intending to do after the current academic year ends. If you are interested in a teaching or administrative job outside of your home country then this is the time to start getting ready.  Recruitment is a highly contended time, with many schools preferring to offer contracts to people early to snap up the right people prior to the Job Fair season (Jan-Feb).  If you have your eye…

    Training – Running and Fitness

This week I have caught up on Jarrod Robinson’s (aka The PE Geek) podcasts and it has been a little while so I had many episodes to choose from as I have picked up my training this last 10 days so more time to listen to ideas and see what appeals in my current thinking and planning of units.  If you don’t listen to the podcasts, think about adding them as a resource of about 20mins/ fortnight to your calendar. I am in the midst of cramming my brain full of Training Principles and ideas for my Grade 10 unit.  I want to have them leaving the unit considering How…

Tracking student Movement – not just a PE teacher’s job

This week three different stimuli have sat with me and they blend into one big issue – a much more sedentary life (which is killing us!) and that everyone needs to play a role in fixing it.   Movement education and Wellness are not just the responsibility of the PE teacher or coach in the after school programme, like literacy, we are all responsible for educating our students and sharing best life-long practice! I like to think that I am an active lifestyle person and a good role model.  I have my Fitbit on and this week received a new Flex (my One got eaten by the washing machine and…

    PE Minutes – Survey Results

PE Minutes are precious and I haven’t met a Physed Teacher who wouldn’t like to have more of them each day or week or month with their students.  A few weeks ago I asked the PE community online to share the number of classes and the minutes/week they had in their PE classes from Early Learning to Grade 12.  In the Gallery above, you can see the results of the survey.   Now, the sample size isn’t huge, with some emails and Twitter sharing I had about 30 people respond for themselves or their departments.  I would like to share these results to let others think about what their PE…
