MYP #PhysEd and the inquiry cycle – Net Games for HS students
Mastermind by Steve Berry CC BY SA YIS have adopted the MYP Next Chapter this year and this means that our PE Department are starting to sort out how our criteria have changed under the new guide. My colleague, Alex, and I are quite into semantics, and can quite easily engage in conversation about what words mean and how we ensure our learners are truly connecting their learning to their assessment and feedback through the use of the key command words. So far I am enjoying the fact that the new command words (eg. describe, explain, justify) are the same words that are found in other subject guides, this ensures…

Who appraises or offers you Feedback?
Two Faced Justice by Johnson Cameraface CC BY NC SA The dreaded word around the MYP PE faculty and classroom is ‘reflection’. Do we have to do another one – really? It seems you can tell when the end of a reporting period is up as the students are madly reflecting on everything they have learned and teachers roll their eyes in solidarity – reflection time again – please spare us. I read Jen Hatmaker’s blog post on being the Worst End of School Mom Ever and took some of this away as I thought about how I end each of my units and how I watch the slog over reflections,…

All teched up, where to from here?
Ultra-modern Cabot Place by UGG boy UGG girl licensed CC BY Last post on our iPod Trial at UNIS… The school year is almost done and so finishes our iPod trial in the MSHS. Before I go into the end products, it is important for me to thank Ed Gilbreath and the Tech team (especially Mr Long) for the opportunity to trial mobile tech in PE and for my own professional growth and learning during this process. I would also like to thank Clint Hamada for his never-ending patience and wise sage-like advice at times of despair and for sharing our home computer with 4 iPods and related issues. And…

Slow Progress – iPod trial
Undecided by Rafael Peñaloza CC BY NC SA Have you ever thought that things would run at a certain pace, but been amazed at the reality? That is how I am feeling about my iPod trial. I suppose because I read about the great things that other PE faculties and teachers do, I dreamed that all of this would suddenly begin for me here at UNIS. However, I am findng that it takes longer than I had originally thought. My post here is not intended to be negative or pessimistic, I am loving finding out what I could/should do with my iPods in class, but there are some hiccups that are…

Assessment
We are having some great discussions at school at the moment around assessment. It seems that our students are overwhelmed by summative assessment and to be honest so am I. I have been trialing playing with more formative assessment this year and it is going well, but it still adds up to more marking and time away from feedback and advice in lessons (things slide when I am tired of marking…) but I thought it would generate some more questions. I pondered whether I needed to offer a ‘large’ piece of assessment to students – could I offer smaller pieces of work over time and forego the summative big piece? …

PE, Tech and the MYP
Last weekend I was lucky enough to go to Yokohama International School and meet up with Jarrod (aka @mrrobbo) and a room full of keen and inspired PE teachers from all over the region. We met under the hashtag #pegeeksyis and we went to talk about how we can really push forward with integrating technology and mobile apps into our classes. Jarrod presented some fabulous new apps that have come out both apple, android and also web based, and I have summarised most of those in this document. What I came away with was the feeling that it was time to start documenting what we do as an MYP school. …

Health assessment
Eat five fruits or vegetables a day by Stefan licensed by CC NC SA So, this year our PE department will drop two of our school-used/developed Criterion and focus on one only [1. We have decided to do this as we don’t teach enough lessons/unit to make it worth having a summative test or assignment. Some units align very nicely with other PE units – like Fitness – and so we have decided to use the Criteria A (MYP) Use of Knowledge rather than a school-only criteria.]. This criterion has to do with social skills/interaction in the classroom and communication. The question we are trying to answer is how do…

Screen casting
I have been interested in screencasting and using what screen casts offer for a while but this year really decided that I would try and use them for a variety of analysis and flip-class room projects and then have used socrative to try and gather really anonymous feedback from students about whether they are using them. I tried screenr to begin with and have found this program to be mostly reliable and very easy to use. If you create an account it helps as you can then keep all your screencasts together allowing students to return to your stream multiple times. I have also used screencastomatic which has more mouse…
