All teched up, where to from here?

Ultra-modern Cabot Place by UGG boy UGG girl licensed CC BY Last post on our iPod Trial at UNIS… The school year is almost done and so finishes our iPod trial in the MSHS. Before I go into the end products, it is important for me to thank Ed Gilbreath and the Tech team (especially Mr Long) for the opportunity to trial mobile tech in PE and for my own professional growth and learning during this process. I would also like to thank Clint Hamada for his never-ending patience and wise sage-like advice at times of despair and for sharing our home computer with 4 iPods and related issues.  And…

    PD – staff using iPods

Unboxing iPod Touch by FHKE CC BY SA Recently I was one of 20 presenters at our annual school Speedgeeking session.  I decided to focus on iPods/iDevices and to introduce my audience to Coach’s Eye/Dropbox and Reflector.  I had 7 minutes to discuss these with my audience (between 4-7 people) and repeated the experience 7 times to new people. I started off with the usual speel, who I am; what I teach; what I am trialing and trying to do in PE and then launched into the apps and iDevices.  But after the second round of 7 minutes, I had to take a step back.  I was finding that in…

    SprintTimer – T&F Day Review

Bad Position by Kennymatic licensed by CC BY I am following on from my last post reviewing some apps that I trialled on my recent Track and Field days.   You can read back about the ideas here and the first app here.   SprintTimer SprintTimer is a very nifty app created by Sten Kaiser.  It allows you to take photo finish images at the end of your sprint or relay events with high quality images to share with your school community. I should have had more of a play of this app prior to using it on the day.  It isn’t complicated, but there are multiple settings you can choose from…

Burst Mode – T&F Day review

My school recently held two Track and Field days – one for Middle and one for High school. As a tech type person I decided to trial some apps for sharing technique but more to capture some flavor of the events over the day. I found that it would have been more useful to have a clear plan of use for the day, which apps and how to really use them, as some settings were more effective for different events. I used my iPod 5 and I didn’t have internet access on our field, so no real time sharing happened. But I did share images with some students on the…

    iPod Trial – Update

Contest /B mode by Granada Turnier CC BY Pioneering new ideas or changing to new ways of operating takes time. People look at you a little differently and can often expect rapid shift or change in a short amount of time.  If this sounds familiar, keep going! It has taken a while to get really into the trial with my MS HS students. My initial excitement is not waning but it has taken time to work out how we are going to use these devices to really engage student learning and to ensure that they will work. A few notes of the process over the last few weeks: • iDevices…

Mastering skills in Badminton – enhanced by Tech!

I have written previously about a Badminton Unit I trialed last year with Simon Mills where we focused on Mastering skills starting with basic and then moving to progressively more difficult skills as the unit went along.   I should add that these skills came from a book (yes a book!) from our office – Badminton: Steps to success. This unit was harsh – we expected students to Master a particular skill before they could progress and we pushed them hard on peer coaching and had frequent teacher assessment as part of this unit. This year I am taking my G8 students a step further.  Many of these students were a…

    Shiny New iPods!

A few months back I began to campaign for an iPod trial in my PE classes at UNIS Hanoi.  Today the final four of my new iPod 5 Generations arrived and I have spent the last hour tonight plugging them in, syncing them up and preparing them for the first day of use tomorrow.  I feel like a parent preparing the children for the first day of school.  “What did you pack for them?” I hear you asking.  Well let me share a few of the various apps I have chosen for my first work this week.   Coaches Eye – Coaches eye is one of my favourite apps in…

PD session on Technology for Practical Subjects

Ken Forde (@KenForde) from WAB and I met at the PE Geeks workshop in Yokohama last year.  It was clear after our meeting and chats that we are both like minded PE teachers, and so with this in mind, we discussed how we could share our love of education and learning as well as the tech revolution that is changing PE as we know it, with other teachers.  We designed a workshop to present this March at the PE strand of the EARCOS conference, and it was accepted (so you can see it there if you like!).  Unfortunately I am not able to attend due to school issues and my…
