PD session on Technology for Practical Subjects
Ken Forde (@KenForde) from WAB and I met at the PE Geeks workshop in Yokohama last year. It was clear after our meeting and chats that we are both like minded PE teachers, and so with this in mind, we discussed how we could share our love of education and learning as well as the tech revolution that is changing PE as we know it, with other teachers. We designed a workshop to present this March at the PE strand of the EARCOS conference, and it was accepted (so you can see it there if you like!). Unfortunately I am not able to attend due to school issues and my…

Innovative Grant
iPad unpacking by ntr23 licensed by CC NC SA For the last year or so, I have been working with some colleagues to try and get our school and PE department more mobile. I have bought my own iPad3 and have been trialing it in different ways and have loved what it brings to my lessons and my students. I am encouraging my Technology director to come and see this in the field so that he can see first hand what can happen with just one iPad and a PE lesson that is ready for it. This year our school has decided to offer some Innovative Technology Grants – some…

How much is too much?
One Click or two by Kaptain Kobold licensed by CC BY NC SA How much work in a unit is too much? I would be the first to say it is likely that I am guilty of trying to do too much in a PE unit, but is it too much? How do you gauge what is acceptable and what is too much work for you as the teacher (or teachers if you teach across the grade level) and the students? I would like to try and quantify this if possible. Here are my ideas so far: It is too much work when – you can’t easily get the…

Ipads at school
So this year I have managed to get my hands on a shiney new ipad3 and I have decided to start doing my own trials at work. I work at a school that uses tablets and one-to-one technology with our students and although I am a very big fan of this, it is cumbersome in PE and can limit what you can do out in the field. I have decided to try and work through the year with some set goals in mind. I am aiming to try and use Google docs so that I can do formative assessment and note taking during my lessons and then be able…

Collaboration
Earlier in our year we had a PD visit from Steve Barkley who is well known around the traps as a huge advocate for Peer Coaching and truly believes that this is the only way to move forward. I didn’t need to be convinced, I really do enjoy collaborative planning and teaching, so long as the people that I am working with are of a simliar mind set and are willing to work for the product/reward of the collaboration. I find that team teaching can be such a great learning curve and allows us the opportunity to be confronted with our own teaching fears but to also share great ideas…
