PhysEdSummit #1 – It’s a Wrap
Last weekend ago I was so excited to be a part of the PhysEdSummit which was hosted as a series of Google Hangouts late into my Japanese night (breakfast time for USA #Physed folk) by the very amazing Physedagogy team. If you didn’t tune in, don’t panic! You can catch up on the program here and if you want to see my Google Presentation without the Google Hangout session narration, you can see them here. I am planning to do some more PD and watching over the next month. I wanted to share that the progress being made in PE is a great step for those in the profession…

All teched up, where to from here?
Ultra-modern Cabot Place by UGG boy UGG girl licensed CC BY Last post on our iPod Trial at UNIS… The school year is almost done and so finishes our iPod trial in the MSHS. Before I go into the end products, it is important for me to thank Ed Gilbreath and the Tech team (especially Mr Long) for the opportunity to trial mobile tech in PE and for my own professional growth and learning during this process. I would also like to thank Clint Hamada for his never-ending patience and wise sage-like advice at times of despair and for sharing our home computer with 4 iPods and related issues. And…

iPod Trial – Update
Contest /B mode by Granada Turnier CC BY Pioneering new ideas or changing to new ways of operating takes time. People look at you a little differently and can often expect rapid shift or change in a short amount of time. If this sounds familiar, keep going! It has taken a while to get really into the trial with my MS HS students. My initial excitement is not waning but it has taken time to work out how we are going to use these devices to really engage student learning and to ensure that they will work. A few notes of the process over the last few weeks: • iDevices…

Launching Apps for Academics
Last year I met a hero of mine, Jarrod Robinson. Jarrod (aka @mrrobbo) is the founder of the PE Geeks movement mashing together PE and Tech into some fantastic new territory. Jarrod ran a workshop at Yokohama International School talking and sharing his passion about the role that Apple products and apps are taking shape in his classes. Inspired by his down to earth approach and my own desire to see great things in the classroom, I made the decision to make Apps for Academics to use in their classes with the goal to bring together Google Docs, Apple and to make things easier for teachers on the move. Mobile…

Screen-casting in Gymnastics and Dance
Dancing Troopers by Kalexanderson CC BY NC SA I have mentioned on twitter about using technology in my Gymnastics and Dance classes and thought I would delve a little deeper into this in a blog post. Last year I began my Gymnastics unit with Grade 7 students. This unit really focuses around Floor routines using balances and other tumbling and so I pitch it to the students with the importance of Team work and also on giving lots of feedback as the routines are very aesthetic and require students to think and be more aware of presenting themselves and on proprioception within their routines. I was using the typical…

Mastering skills in Badminton – enhanced by Tech!
I have written previously about a Badminton Unit I trialed last year with Simon Mills where we focused on Mastering skills starting with basic and then moving to progressively more difficult skills as the unit went along. I should add that these skills came from a book (yes a book!) from our office – Badminton: Steps to success. This unit was harsh – we expected students to Master a particular skill before they could progress and we pushed them hard on peer coaching and had frequent teacher assessment as part of this unit. This year I am taking my G8 students a step further. Many of these students were a…

PE app for Badminton Class
A hard days work by Kalexanderson CC BY NC SA Everyone tells me that I spend too much time on work. I don’t feel the same way. Robert Appino got me thinking more about Game based learning and Jarrod Robinson and Liz Halina inspired me this week with the work they are doing on App building and on recent data that suggests the Video Analysis of student work is enriching technique and confidence. So I decided that I would work a little later and longer on a Badminton App for my students (and their parents) to use during our next unit. The unit itself centers around Mastering a Skill…

Slow Progress – iPod trial
Undecided by Rafael Peñaloza CC BY NC SA Have you ever thought that things would run at a certain pace, but been amazed at the reality? That is how I am feeling about my iPod trial. I suppose because I read about the great things that other PE faculties and teachers do, I dreamed that all of this would suddenly begin for me here at UNIS. However, I am findng that it takes longer than I had originally thought. My post here is not intended to be negative or pessimistic, I am loving finding out what I could/should do with my iPods in class, but there are some hiccups that are…
