Sharing our Failures
IMG_0873 by Taylorbri CC BY Last week on Twitter, I had a conversation over a few hours with @IMsporticus, Dean Dudley, Doug Gleddie, Andy Vasily, Dr Ash Casey, MrsLieke, TimFletcher12 and Mark Williams came in at the end. Phew! The central take-aways of our conversation for me was the interest in how we should not continually high-fiving ourselves or using social media for this platform, but about how we can use our PLNs for a much richer conversation that involves feedback and critique of our work as #physed teachers and learners of our craft. There is a lot of information on twitter and the original people who put the hashtags up for…

Preparing for a new year
Baby Red Mangrove by Bob Peterson CC BY SA As I sit and reflect on the joys and windfalls and the areas on which I would like to see improvement from last school year, it is often overwhelming to try and decide where to place focus for the new year at hand. I would like to share some of the long wish list that I am pondering about and to see where this shapes and takes me for the coming 12 months. I have enjoyed reading and listening to various sources this summer, a few of these include Andy Vasily’s blog, Vicky Davis and Joey Feith’s blog as well as…

Quickcast and autoCrat – two important #pegeek tools
Invasive Plant Work by Zen Sutherland CC BY NC SA This is not my first sharing on the use of Screencasts and autoCrat as part of the #Physed teacher’s toolkit. But I thought I would share some screencasts of my latest autoCrat journey as I have been asked about it a lot recently on Twitter. I now use Quickcast as my screencast tool, it is easy to install (on my Mac) and is very quick to set up and go. I can only cast for 3 minutes and this is perfect as I can say what I need to usually in that time frame. The screencasts are saved online so…

Track and Field Ramblings – New Age of PE and T&F days!
InfraRed Running Sculpture by Vincent_AF CC BY NC My friend @doug_gleddie and I recently had a wee Twitter flurry focused on alternate track and field events/days. After our short exchange of ideas, we decided to collaborate on this blog post to highlight our perspectives and thoughts. Take a read, tell us what you think and, most importantly, please contribute to the google doc we have started to share your ideas as well (link at the end of the article)! Doug’s Ramblings! I started teaching PE at a school that followed a very traditional program and T&F was run as a school wide meet. When I took over as the male…

Twitter Challenge for PE Teachers
Last year I berated my husband (@chamada) for always being ‘connected’ and checking his tweets. I couldn’t understand what he was doing and how this was important to do during stressful times. I decided that if I he was getting so much from this attachment, that I would do a challenge and test out Twitter for myself and see what the fuss was all about. I started small. I researched some of the PE people that interested me. I emailed some of my friends in Australia as well as Hong Kong, Singapore, USA, Tanzania etc and asked them about their Twitter use and whether they used it and did a…

PEPLC begins
Twitter is amazing PD and any PE teacher interested in jumping into the revolution that is taking place would be greatly adding to an incredibly diverse and rich opportunity. Other subject area teachers have mentioned that they are blown away at the PE discussions and great World-wide sharing that takes place daily and are jealous of the way that PE is leading as an example, join to watch and read and then splash out and start sharing! PEPLC or PE Professional Learning Community has been set up by Andy Vasily and Nathan Horne and is supported by a committee of other great PE people: has come out of other PD…

#PhysEd – what is it? Time for change!
083of365[NTR23] by NTR23 licensed CC BY NC SA Like other #PhysEd teachers connected on twitter, I have also pondered @jessicaolien‘s article “Dodgeball Should Not Be Part of Any Curriculum, Ever” and read about the first 100 comments associated with her article and have been left scratching my head. I have read @PENathan‘s blog post “Being a #PhysEd role Model” and also watched/read and listened to most of the articles, podcasts and videos that he mentions (small World sometimes!) and I am left feeling there is a serious disconnect between what I see going on in many PE classrooms and what I read about what other’s experiences were in their…
